| First impressions are lasting impressions.
I am 54 years old, and live in Northeastern Montana. I want to learn music, and chose the viola for the sound it makes. I still don't know first position from third position, but I have a goal of playing church music and possibly even playing in the local symphonette, someday. So, I rented a quality viola and ordered this one from Andy Fein. I have been scratching around on the rental for a while, and finally ordered this one. I felt I needed something to compare to. First impressions: The viola arrived 2nd day air, as promised. I ordered 2 bows with this viola. Even a rank amateur like me can feel and hear the difference, and I already have a favorite--the carbon graphite bow. Opening the case, I could see, feel, and smell quality. Comparison of the bridges between the two instruments showed the much greater attention to detail given to the Fein. Under the chin, the Fein [viola] has the feel of quality, and comparison of the sounds--even though I cannot play, yet--is no contest. The Fein viola balances physically and tonally, and it sounds alive! It will be a joyous instrument to learn and I am sure it will take me as far, musically, as I am capable of achieving. Mark I.
