| First impressions are lasting impressions.
I am 54 years old, and live in Northeastern Montana. I want to learn music, and chose the viola for the sound it makes. I still don't know first position from third position, but I have a goal of playing church music and possibly even playing in the local symphonette, someday. So, I rented a quality viola and ordered this one from Andy Fein. I have been scratching around on the rental for a while, and finally ordered this one. I felt I needed something to compare to. First impressions: The viola arrived 2nd day air, as promised. I ordered 2 bows with this viola. Even a rank amateur like me can feel and hear the difference, and I already have a favorite--the carbon graphite bow. Opening the case, I could see, feel, and smell quality. Comparison of the bridges between the two instruments showed the much greater attention to detail given to the Fein. Under the chin, the Fein [viola] has the feel of quality, and comparison of the sounds--even though I cannot play, yet--is no contest. The Fein viola balances physically and tonally, and it sounds alive! It will be a joyous instrument to learn and I am sure it will take me as far, musically, as I am capable of achieving. Mark I. | Just a note to let you know that tonight for the first time at symphony rehearsal, my stand partner was there to hear my new viola. I compared the sound of his very expensive French viola to mine. Thank you so much for the Viola you sent to my son, Jason. We had a couple of conversations with John as to what we were looking for. We listened to John play a few Viola’s over the phone. The first one Jason received was not quite what he was looking for. We spoke with John again and my son explained the type of sound he needed to hear. John spoke with you and you immediately sent a new instrument.
Jason was amazed with the sound that came from this instrument. He played it for hours after receiving it and smiles broadly whenever he puts bow to string. He is very hard to please and we had other visits to Luthier’s lined up before this instrument came. My son played instruments while he was looking that costs thousands (just to listen to the sound) that did not seem to have the sound that came from your instrument.
We appreciate the time and effort you put into providing us with an instrument within our means that sounds this wonderful. This is an instrument that he will be proud to play for years to come.
